During 2011 Castle Howard is holding a major exhibition of the paintings and drawings of George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, to commemorate the centenary of his death.
A practising artist for his entire life, Howard’s work included portraits, landscapes, everyday scenes, and family episodes – all beautifully observed and delicately captured. He travelled extensively throughout England and Italy, and journeyed to India, Egypt, South Africa and the Caribbean in search of new landscapes and subjects to paint.
His life and work was influenced by his close relationships with key figures in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, most especially William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. On display is a rich selection of his paintings – many of them never seen in public before – together with examples of his sketchbooks and correspondence to family and friends, drawn from private archives.
Admission to this exhibition and others is included in your admission ticket to the House & Grounds.
