Yorkshire Day is once again upon us, a day when Yorkshire folk, customs and traditions are celebrated across the county and we’ll be flying our Yorkshire flag with pride.
The famous white rose with its blue backdrop will be fluttering in the breeze in front of our iconic dome which rises dramatically from the rolling Yorkshire countryside.

Set in the heart of the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the estate is the perfect place to discover the beauty of Yorkshire and fall in love with the county and its folk. We’ve picked our five favourite views from across the estate but there are so many more to discover, remember you can share your favourite views with us on instagram using #castlehoward

Favourite Views
  • Making up part of the centenary way the footpath along the sheep walk, at the top of the ups and downs of the road to Slingsby, gives the first intriguing glimpse of the house nestled among the greenery.
  • It’s hard to beat the 360 degree views from the Temple of the Four Winds. From this picturesque pavilion look out across the agricultural fields and woodland with glimpses of the private family Mausoleum and New River Bridge.

  • So called because of the sudden reveal of Castle Howard on the horizon, Exclamation Gates sit high above the estate village of Welburn offering views across the monuments which dot the estate to the house itself.
  • Castle Howard’s famous avenue runs due north in a straight line for 5 miles across the estate, giving tantalising glimpses and surprise views along its length. Punctuated with impressive monuments there are plenty of opportunities to stop and stare.
  • Climb the footpath from Bog Hall up Hepton Hill and enjoy this underappreciated view south across the fields.

Our team of guides who boast an impressive knowledge of Castle Howard, surely Yorkshire’s most famous country house, are wearing their white roses with pride. In the Garden Centre you can pick up the beautifully fragrant Ice Cream rose, a hybrid tea rose which produces beautiful white blooms perfect for pinning to your lapel or filling up a vase.

We’ve got lots of tasty Yorkshire treats to tempt you in our Farm Shop from Helmsley Brewing Company beer and unique cheeses from the Yorkshire cheesemongers Shepherds Purse, to estate reared meat traditionally prepared by our butchers.
