Replica Crown Jewels Go On Display

A set of replica crown jewels will go on display at Castle Howard this Diamond Jubilee weekend, from Saturday 2nd until Tuesday 5th June 2012.

The collection of 22 items, which includes Crowns, Sceptres, Orb and Coronation Ring was commissioned by Castle Howard for the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Curator Dr Christopher Ridgway says, “The Diamond Jubilee is the perfect occasion to bring these pieces out of storage for our visitors to enjoy, as a reminder of the coronation in 1953, with an explanation of how these pieces were used in that famous ceremony. Each item is made of gold-plated brass and glass to the same size as the real crown jewels.”.

As well as the replica crown jewels, visitors to Castle Howard this Jubilee weekend can join in the fun with ‘Animal Antics’ – an animal-themed event featuring a fun dog show, the chance to handle exotic snakes, reptiles and spiders, plus birds of prey displays.

All activities are included in the normal admission price.  Open from10am daily.
