Archbishop of York Conducts Outdoor Service
Latest From: House & Grounds
The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, visited Castle Howard on Sunday 15 May as he came to the end of his 6 month Diocesan Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness and Blessing which finished at York Minster on 22 May 2016.
After meeting the Howard family, the Archbishop met with visitors in the grounds and lead an outdoor Pentecost service on the south lawn, including a baptism in the Atlas Fountain.
Revd Anne Freestone, Castle Howard’s Chaplain comments: ‘It was wonderful to welcome the Archbishop of York to Castle Howard as he came to the end of his diocesan pilgrimage, especially on the day of Pentecost. The Archbishop's visit is such an important part of the work of the Chaplaincy programme at Castle Howard that has changed and grown over the last year; offering pastoral care to the community and a variety of services and events in the spectacular Castle Howard chapel.’
During his Pilgrimage the Archbishop has walked a sizeable distance each day from the coast, over moor and dale, along highways and byways, through both rural and urban communities and across an area which spans the Humber to the Tees and the A1 to the coast.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said: “Pentecost is a time to celebrate the Holy Spirit, poured out for all. Throughout my Pilgrimage I have set out to meet people, pray with them, and to encourage them to follow Christ, and bless what God is doing. Pentecost or Whit Sunday as it is commonly known is a wonderful opportunity to pray for everyone to receive new life by the Holy Spirit. When a person is filled with the Holy Spirit it is amazing – we are utterly transformed from within. The coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to Jesus’ first disciples meant a celebration of new life for the Church. Join in sharing God’s love with others this Pentecost!”
