Discover the House & History

Visit Castle Howard and discover one of England's finest historic houses.  Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, its creation spanned the lifetime of three Earls and numerous craftsmen.  Today it is the home to the Hon Simon and Mrs Howard and their children Merlin and Octavia.

As you move through the dramatic interiors, many of which contain world-famous collections, our friendly guides, located throughout, will share their detailed knowledge and relate the many varied stories of previous generations. Follow the links to discover more about the family, the world-renowned collections, our changing exhibitions, as well as guided tours and talks; all of which open up the world of Castle Howard. 

You are welcome to enter the House as many times as you like during your visit. Chairs are located throughout the house if you would like to rest, or just take some time to soak up the atmosphere.   A wheelchair lift to the main floor is located just inside the house entrance.
