The Butchery

At the heart of the Farm Shop is an excellent butchers’ counter, which supplies meat predominantly sourced within a 15-mile radius of Castle Howard, with much of it sourced from farms on the estate.

Our Castle Howard estate reared Aberbeen Angus beef is farmed by Mike Fargher and is hung for 21 days before sale.  Our Howardian Hills lamb is from another tenant farmer, J Clifford and sons of Heights Farm in Slingsby, which has been in the same family for three generations.  The lamb is hand picked for our needs by our own Richard Clifford.

The pork we offer is a mixture of Gloucester Old Spot and Gloucester Old Spot crossed with Saddleback for good quality and great flavour.  The Gloucester Old Spot is sourced from Mrs Gill of West Field Yard, Flat Top, Terrington, who has farmed there for over ten years.  While the Gloucester Old Spot x Saddleback is sourced from Carol Flint & Dave Hardy from Grange Farm Produce, Grange Farm, Sutton on the Forest. They have farmed there since 1943.  (Their parents used to be Castle Howard tenant farmers.)

In the Butchery Department we believe in good old fashioned values; customer care, quality produce, value for money. We also listen to customer needs to produce top quality meat.  We can also prepare speciality orders for dinner parties i.e. Guards of Honor, Rack of Lamb, French trimmed, Steaks cut to size and BBQ packs for summer.

Our butchery team - Geoff Speight, Richard Clifford and Richard Hudson - have over 80 years experience.  Call them on 01653 648616 to discuss your requirements.

The Delicatessen

Enjoy freshly baked pies from Voakes of Whixley Grange (most recently awarded supreme pork pie champion 2009), as well as pasties, quiche and sausage rolls from Yorkshire Baker, who are based at Norton.

Take a pick of fine regional cheeses, including cheeses from Shepherd’s Purse Cheeses to Wensleydale; as well as some from further afield including Snowdonia’s extra mature cheddar and Quickes cheddar, plus delicious Cropwell Bishop stilton.

Our cooked meats selection include continental varieties, plus award winning roast hams from Arthur Haigh based at Thirsk.  We also stock a small range of patés from Patchwork Patés, who hand-make small batches using no artificial flavours or colours.

Home-Baking & Artisan Bread

The Farm Shop has a daily supply of bakery items from Castle Howard's own kitchen including fresh scones, bakewell tarts, buttercream buns and caramel shortcake slices, plus regular deliveries from small local suppliers to ensure variety  and that home made taste, including sponge cakes, raspberry shortcakes, ginger and oat biscuits and fruit pies, as well as daily supplies of freshly made breads and rolls from Norton Bakery, and artisan bread - traditionally made and slow proved, from a small bakery in Haxby. The range includes Baguettes, Sour Dough, Granary, Three Grain, Seven Seed, Olive & Lemon, Overnight Crusty White.  All made using organic flour from Shipton Mill and Yorkshire Organic Millers. Artisan bread is delivered every Friday and Saturday morning.

Vegetables, Groceries, Gifts and More...

We stock a small selection of seasonal vegetables, sourced locally and regionally, and a small harvest each year from Castle Howard's vegetable garden.

Our grocery line is sourced with an emphasis on Yorkshire produce and quality artisan foods, with many Guild of Fine Food award winning products and fair trade items.  You can also browse a range of wheat and gluten free products including ready-to-eat sweet and savoury snacks, cake and scone mixes and bread flour.

Regionally produced beers to take home include Copper Dragon, Cropton and York Breweries (who produce the Brideshead Bitter), plus Yorkshire Cider from Ampleforth Abbey and fruit wines from the Yorkshire Wine Company.  We also have a small range of tea and coffee.

In the chiller cabinets our diary selection includes milk, yogurt and small whole cheeses, plus smoked salmon and patés.
