Castle Howard is located 15 miles north east of York, with easy access from the A64.

Important Coach Driver Information

Coach drivers should approach Castle Howard via Malton to avoid narrow arches.

Please be aware that on approaching Castle Howard from the A64, access is through the Carmire Gate 2.6m x 3.43m (8’ 6” wide x 11’ 3” high). If you have doubts about being able to negotiate this gateway, please approach Castle Howard via Malton.

A64 Eastbound: Go past the brown Castle Howard sign and continue into Malton. As you approach the town centre, just before the Talbot Hotel, take a sharp left into Castle Howard Road, signed Castle Howard and Coneysthorpe.

A64 Westbound: Exit the A64 at the Malton/Pickering roundabout. Take the left turn into Malton/Old Malton (ignore the brown sign directing you back onto the A64), and continue into the town centre. At the traffic lights go straight over, and after the Talbot Hotel turn right into Castle Howard Road, signed Castle Howard and Coneysthorpe. Approximate travel times are:

  • York 30 mins
  • Scarborough 50 mins
  • Thirsk 50 mins
  • Leeds 1 hr
  • Whitby 1 hr
  • Hull 1 hr 15 mins
  • Sheffield 1 hr 30 mins
