The Spirit of Christmas Past & Present

During this special time the house is wrapped up in the warmth of open fires with each room sympathetically decorated and the promise of tasty festive treats wafting through the air. It becomes the ultimate Christmas home. For many, the Great Hall tree has become a highlight over the years. Bringing in the Christmas Trees

Subscribe to e-newsletter Bringing in the Christmas Trees By Hannah Cooke // Mon 17 th November 2014 Christmas How many people does it take to put up a Christmas tree? Here at Castle Howard it’s around 20! This morning saw the arrival of the huge trees which fill the Great Hall and Long Gallery octagon every year for our Christmas opening. The trees are carried in by the gardens and building services teams and lifted into their specially made bases. There’s a bit of to-ing and fro-ing to make sure they are straight and some twisting and turning so we get the best angle, but after the burst of activity the trees slot in to place surprisingly easily and are soon in and up and looking great. Now the fun begins...baubles need threading and lights untangling, then it's up

10 Top Christmas Tree Tips

Subscribe to e-newsletter 10 Top Christmas Tree Tips By Will Howard // Tue 18 th November 2014 Christmas; Garden Centre Take care of your tree and it should last through the Christmas period. Follow my ten top tips for keeping your tree looking fresh and green. Encourage your tree to drink plenty of water, a Christmas tree with no roots will still drink water by capillary action through its trunk, in the same way a cut flower in a vase does. Before placing your tree in water, saw the bottom 1” (3cm) of the trunk away as this will open up the pores which have blocked since harvesting. If you are not decorating your tree immediately it will be best kept in a bucket of water, somewhere cool and out of the wind. By removing the net at this point you will allow...
