  • Can I look round the house more than once?
With a valid ticket you can enter the house & grounds as many times as you like on the day of your visit.  
  • I'm a member of the HHA, do i get free entry?

With effect from 1 May 2017, HHA Friends will be able to visit Castle Howard free of charge once per calendar year, excluding during Castle Howard’s Flower Festival and Christmas opening. We regret that we cannot permit access without a valid membership card. This is a requirement of the HHA who recompenses Castle Howard for each visit.

  • Are the house & grounds accessible to all?

A hearing loop is located in the Ticket Office. Facilities for wheelchair users and those with restricted mobility include designated parking, onsite land-transport and manual wheelchair loans. Carers are admitted to the House and Grounds free of charge. A wheelchair lift (manual chairs only) provides access to the house with the exception of the High South, Chapel and Exhibition Wing. The garden paths are a mixture of mown turf and gravel, with ramps to certain areas.

  • Are pushchairs allowed in the house?

Pushchairs are not permitted in the house, but can be stored in a pushchair holding area. 'Hip-seats' can be borrowed to assist in carrying children (6 months - 3 years old) through the house. Nappy changing facilities can be found in the house, lakeside and courtyard toilets.

  • Are bikes allowed in the grounds

We regret that bikes, children's scooters etc are not allowed in the grounds due to the amount of Estate traffic on the drive.

  • Are dogs allowed in the grounds?

Dogs are welcome in the Castle Howard grounds as long as they are kept on a lead at all times, bins are provided for dog waste so please pick up. Dogs are not permitted in the adventure playground or house, with the exception of assistance dogs. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating areas at our cafés and water bowls are provided. Free bones are available from the farm shop, subject to availability.

  • When do the fountains run?

The Atlas Fountain runs daily throughout the high season, between 10.45am and, the Prince of Wales Fountain is on at weekends only. Both fountains are powered by the Ray Wood Reservoir and due to fluctuating water levels they may not be operating at all times.

  • Can I take photos?

Photography is permitted within the house and gardens for personal use.  In the house, tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted and flash photography should be avoided. Please be aware that drones are not permitted for use in the gardens. If  you wish to take commercial photography (including drone footage), you must gain prior approval from our press office.

Wedding and engagement photography is not permitted in the house or gardens without prior approval from our wedding coordinator. A fee applies for all wedding and engagment photography, please contact for details.

  • Are the roads suitable for large vehicles?

Height restrictions apply when approaching Castle Howard from eastbound on the A64 due to low and narrow archways on the approach road. Vehicles over 3.43m high x 2.60m wide should continue on the A64 to Malton and approach Castle Howard via Coneysthorpe (follow the brown signs from Malton).
