A Walk in the Woods

There’s no better way to explore a landscape than on foot and with over 2000 acres of woodland and extensive footpaths and bridleways, at Castle Howard there’s a walk to suit everyone.

Set within the Howardian Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the woodlands are a magical place to spend the day. Ramble through carpets of bluebells in spring, listen out for birdsong during summer, enjoy a stunning display of colours in autumn and find shelter under the evergreens in winter.

Castle Howard itself lies close to the woodland and is the perfect base for walkers and cyclists, with plentiful free parking as well as free admission to the Stable Courtyard, its shops, cafés and toilet facilities.

Explore our woodlands today with this selection of downloadable walking and cycling routes to get you started. You can find more walking and cycling circuits on the Howardian Hills website.

Look out for exclusive guided walks led by our Head Forester available to Friends of Castle Howard on special dates throughout the year. Check our Friends What’s On page for details.
