Squirrel Talks
Discover more about the Red Squirrels at the Arboretum. Join our free talk on Tuesdays & Saturdays at 10.30am, (weather dependent). Please meet in the Red Squirrel Enclosure.
Included With Arboretum Tickets

Red squirrels are one of the Arboretum’s most cherished residents, and this informal talk offers a wonderful opportunity to learn more about these fascinating animals and the efforts made to protect them. Led by knowledgeable members of the team, the session explores red squirrel behaviour, habitat and why the Arboretum is such an important refuge for them.

Perfect for families, nature lovers, and curious minds of all ages, this short talk adds extra depth to your visit and encourages a closer connection with the wildlife that thrives across the Estate. Free to attend with normal admission, it’s a simple but rewarding way to enrich your time at the Castle Howard Arboretum and discover more about one of Britain’s most iconic native species.

The Castle Howard Arboretum is home to one of the UK’s most successful Red Squirrel breeding programmes. Since the programme started in 2023, 15 kits have been born and have gone on to partner breeding programmes, and into the wild at suitable locations in Wales.

Please note: Due to breeding regulations and to help ensure genetic diversity, we are currently awaiting our next set of adult Red Squirrels, and expect the new male Squirrel to take up residence this Spring, with females following at the appropriate time. This means that currently there are no Squirrels to see in the enclosure, and essential maintenance is taking place to ensure it is ready to welcome our new inhabitants.

Talks are included with your admission ticket.
