The Castle Howard Arboretum is home to one of the UK’s most successful Red Squirrel breeding programmes. Since the programme started in 2023, 15 kits have been born and have gone on to partner breeding programmes, and into the wild at suitable locations in Wales.
Please note: Due to breeding regulations and to help ensure genetic diversity, we are currently awaiting our next set of adult Red Squirrels, and expect the new male Squirrel to take up residence in time for Easter, with females following at the appropriate time. This means that currently there are no Squirrels to see in the enclosure, and essential maintenance is taking place to ensure it is ready to welcome our new inhabitants.
