Castle Howard partners with Yorwaste to reduce it's environmental impact
Latest From: House & Grounds
As part of a new waste management service being provided by
Yorwaste
from May this year, all of the material collected from Castle Howard will either be recycled or transformed into green electricity – providing one of Britain’s finest stately homes with a landfill diversion solution for its waste.
The main focus of the new partnership will be on recycling, with dedicated containers being situated across the 8,800-acre site to collect materials such as paper, plastic bottles, aluminium and steel tins and cardboard. There will also be separate containers for glass.
This material will be collected by
Yorwaste
on a weekly basis and taken less than 20 miles away to the company’s Harewood Whin facility for sorting and separation, before being sent for final recycling into their original states.
Separate general waste and food waste bins will also be on site. The general waste will be taken to the state-of-the-art Allerton Waste Recovery Park, near York. Here, it will undergo energy from waste treatment which ultimately will provide electricity which is fed back into the National Grid. Enough energy is created at Allerton Park to power 40,000 homes, equivalent to the size of a town like Harrogate.
Matthew Nicholson, Head of Commercial Operations at Castle Howard, said: “Whether it’s planting thousands of new trees or installing energy efficiency heating, we have always taken an eco-friendly approach to help reduce our environmental impact and ensure Castle Howard can continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
“We welcome over 270,000 visitors to Castle Howard each year, so ensuring we reduce, reuse, recycle or recover the waste generated is an important part of this approach.”
Caitlin Hazell, Sales and Sponsorship Consultant at Castle Howard, said “Working with local suppliers and businesses is important to us, so we are delighted by partnering with a company like Yorwaste who want to support the work we do and understand the benefits of aligning themselves with the ethos of Castle Howard.”
Liz Thompson, Yorwaste Business Development Executive said: “As a company based and operating in North Yorkshire and York, we’re committed to ensuring the area remains a beautiful place in which to live and work.”
“We’re therefore looking forward to working in partnership with Castle Howard to provide a high quality, recycling-focused service.
“As well as providing them with a landfill diversion solution, we are also able guarantee to keep their carbon footprint to an absolute minimum through our unrivalled network of local waste processing facilities.”
Castle Howard are keen to develop relationships with businesses and offer a range of exclusive benefits to partners and sponsors of events like The Proms, which this year will celebrate its 30th Anniversary and The Brideshead Festival. Funds generated from corporate support and sponsorship are invested in conservation projects like extending areas into wildflower meadows and partnering with local schools to create opportunities for children to learn about ecology and conservation, as well restoration work to some of the 200 listed buildings and monuments, including Hawksmoor’s magnificent Mausoleum.
