Ray Wood: A Woodland Garden

Explore the serpentine paths which meander through Ray Wood and discover an impressive botanical collection from around the world, looked after by the Castle Howard Arboretum Trust.

An enchanting woodland garden, Ray Wood holds an impressive collection of plants from around the globe. With nearly 800 species of Rhododendron as well as glades of Pieris, wild roses, magnolias, hydrangeas, viburnums, maples and rowans, Ray Wood is a stunning maze of colourful displays.

Such a large and varied collection means that there is normally something of interest all year round. However, make sure to pay us a visit in spring when the rhododendrons begin to flower; it’s a colourful spectacle that must be seen to be believed!

Come & Explore

There's so much to discover in Ray Wood. Find out what we recommend seeing and doing this season

The Rhododendrons are at their peak in April and light up the wood with splashes of bold and beautiful colour.

The pinks and whites of magnolias add a soft and gentle touch to the wood and look stunning against the blue spring skies.

Bluebells line the edges of the wood in May and thrive in the cool dappled sunlight.
