Volunteer Manager
Depending on experience, 40 hours per week, 5 days over 7 including 1 weekend per month

We are looking for a Volunteer Manager to support and help grow our 170+ volunteers. Our volunteers help us to achieve our vision to preserve Castle Howard as a place to visit for future generations. The ideal candidate will be organised and creative. Creating an environment where every interaction should be a positive one, delivered with a feeling of warmth, friendliness and welcome. This role is perfect for a multitasker who enjoys being busy, can show great attention to detail, loves thinking of better ways to do things.

Duties and responsibilities

Communicating with the volunteer Room Guides (based in the main house) about their availability and using this information to confirm monthly and daily rotas, arranging cover for the days when numbers are low. You will be the main point of contact for volunteer queries, rota swaps, news and views and managing the volunteering inbox.

Working closely with the Marketing Department to recruit new house and garden volunteers. Once in place, you will take new volunteers through a training and orientation programme, making sure that they are confident and happy in their roles.

Liaise with other departments to assist and support their volunteering needs and work closely with Human Resources to ensure that all good practice policies and procedures are upheld. You will submit volunteer expenses and ensure that all relevant security checks are performed. Work alongside the Head of Operations and Security, we will ensure volunteers are security and Health and Safety conscious.

Be creative in how we give back to our volunteers; by planning and delivering exciting recognition, celebration and social events.  Think of new ways that we can say thank you and be forthcoming in suggesting new ideas on how we can champion the visitor and volunteer experience across the site.

Further Information:

This role plays a key part in staffing the house during our busy Christmas period; where our volunteer team is bolstered by temporary Christmas staff in the main house. You will work with Human Resources to train and support these new teams to be able to deliver an amazing Christmas experience. 

This role includes a ‘Duty Management’ element (full training will be provided) working as part of a rota with 2 other people. The Duty Manager is the ‘go-to’ person, dealing with visitor queries and incidents that may present themselves at the visitor attraction, including first aid incidents and fire evacuations.
