Top 10 Tips

for outdoor adventures

Need some inspiration? Here are our top ten things to do outdoors with your family.

Explore the grounds on a cold frosty day and crunch across the lawns leaving a trail of footprints in your wake.

Raining cats and dogs? Bring your wellies and splash around in the biggest puddles you can find before warming up in the café

Play hide and seek round the yew hedges on the South Lawn. Run round to keep yourself warm!

Come along to our Saturday Parkrun. It’s a fantastic family friendly and free run each week. See if you can beat the kids.

The grounds are open until 5pm and in this season of shorter days, it’s sure to be dark before then. Explore the grounds as the sunsets and darkness descends. For adults, take a look at our Dark Skies events in February for more night time adventures.

Wear the kids out at Skelf Island, our new Adventure Playground where they can climb, swing and slide to their hearts content

Explore the twisting paths of Ray Wood, look for animal prints and have a go at the baby animal trail. Make sure you wear your wellies!

Download one of our walking trails and explore the Estate. There are some fantastic frost views to be admired on a clear winter’s day.

Hire a Castle Howard Explorer pack. Filled with fun nature based activities like bug hunting and colouring, they’re a perfect way to get children into nature. Find out more here.

Download our Seasonal Spotters Guide and go in search of wildlife. Tick off each item you spot on your way round.
