Great British Food Festival
By Maria Ellis  //  Tue 25th July 2017
Food, Farm Shop, Festival, Event
If you’re missing GBBO (The Great British Bake-off to those uninitiated few) and have forlornly hung up your apron and laid down your whisk in dejection then I have the perfect remedy for you. It involves a generous serving of cake, a dollop of foodie fun and challenges, lashings of professional cookery creativity and a whole banquet of delicious treats.
There’ll be a picture perfect backdrop, snowy white tents, carefully draped bunting and, fingers crossed, no soggy bottoms. It’s time for The Great British Food Festival!

Summer is now in full swing and this weekend it’s time to unroll the picnic blanket, loosen your belt and indulge in all the delights of the season. Don’t sit down for too long though; with kid’s cookery classes, artisan markets, foraging walks and man vs. food challenges, all to the tune of local bands, there’s a real festival feeling in the air. Make sure you pop into the Demonstration Tent where our own Head Chef, David Haynes, and our top Pastry Chef, Vanessa Wade, will be stirring up a storm and showing you how to cook the Castle Howard way.

It’s not all about the sweet stuff though. If you have a taste for the savoury, then don’t forget to visit the Castle Howard Farm Shop on Saturday 29th where there will be a fantastic range of delicious cheeses to sample, courtesy of Fine Cheeses Ltd. From smooth, marble-veined blues and crumbly, golden cheddars to creamy bries and unusual varieties, we’ll have a selection of cheeses available to taste at the Farm Shop from regional, artisan cheese-makers like Danny & Carol Lockwood at Yorkshire Fine Cheese and the inspirational Razan Alsous of Yorkshire Dama Cheese.

Razan came to the UK in 2012 with her husband and 3 young children while fleeing the war in Syria, determined to make a new life in Yorkshire for her family. Finding it difficult to get great tasting halloumi from the supermarkets and taking inspiration from the fresh Yorkshire milk that surrounded her, Razan used her pharmacy degree and knowledge of micro-biology to create something new. Yorkshire Dama Cheese moved from a day dream into a reality; winning gold in the World Cheese Awards 2016/17, Silver in the British Cheese Awards 2016 and Razan herself was nominated for Woman of the Year 2016.

If you like the type of cheese that has a softer side then a Yorkshire brie might be more to your taste. Hand crafted using fresh milk from Rhine-Issel cattle, Barncliffe Brie is an artisan cheese created by the folk at Yorkshire Fine Cheese. Once the milk and a few secret ingredients have been hand-stirred together at the Barncliffe Mill, the thick, creamy curd is poured into individual moulds and left to ripen into smooth and flavoursome truckles of cheese. Perfect for stuffing chicken with, frying in breadcrumbs with a cranberry dip or simply as an accompaniment to some fine cheese biscuits.

From cheese to chocolate, coffee to cupcakes there’s everything a foodie aficionado could dream of this weekend. Pick up your 10% discount voucher for our Farm Shop from the Castle Howard food table in the festival marquee and treat yourself with some great tasting cheese (or any item of your choice). As with all festivals, it’s always best to be prepared so pack your wellies and sun cream and take a wander round the festival field and Farm Shop. Remember, you’re eyes are never bigger than your stomach!
