Magnificence & Convenience
Event Type: Exhibition

The beautiful interiors of Castle Howard, seemingly unchanged since the House was built and first decorated three hundred years ago. However, you only have to scratch the surface to discover that many of these rooms have experienced the effects of changing fashions and fortunes over the centuries.

Join us this year for an exciting new exhibition which celebrates the history of interior design and decorating at Castle Howard and looks to what the future holds for this magnificent building.

From the splendour of the 3rd Earl of Carlisle's state apartments, to the fashionable Arts & Crafts wallpaper introduced by the 9th Countess, every generation of the Howard family has made their mark. But in the House that has been continuously occupied for three centuries, and also experienced the devastating effects of fire, it is unsurprising that little has remained unaltered over the years. This grand House is also a home, and so comfort and convenience have always been just as important as fashion and good taste to those who have lived here. This exhibition invites our visitors to discover why the decoration and use of the rooms has evolved, and draws on extensive research to examine what we know about past decorative schemes.

We are fortunate that a wealth of source material survives in the Castle Howard collection and archive. Visual records such as photographs and paintings provide invaluable images of lost or altered interiors, while historical visitor accounts not only offer physical descriptions of rooms but can also capture personal reactions. These, along with surviving objects such as wallpapers, furniture and tapestries, help us to form a picture of Castle Howard through the ages.

The exhibition is part of the House tour and runs from March to October 2019.
