Shining A Light On The Chapel
Latest From: House & Grounds

Castle Howard Chapel
Visitors will be able to see the chapel in a whole new light following a major investment. Significant improvements to the lighting system mean one of the most impressive spaces in the house can now be seen in all its glory.

32 new LED lighting units have replaced 11 conventional spotlights showcasing the stunning architectural features and opulent design of this magnificent space.

Particular highlights include the gilt ceiling and Howard family crest, as well as religious murals depicting scenes such as The Salvation of the Angel Gabriel.

The chapel is part of the mid 18th century West Wing of the house and was originally intended to be a dining room.

In the 1870s it was radically altered with the floor being lowered and the entrance changed. It was redecorated in the pre-Raphaelite style and boasts impressive William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones designs.
