The Gardens and Skelf Island Adventure Playground are open daily. The House is now closed until spring, with tickets on sale from the 20th March. In the Courtyard, the Farm Shop, Courtyard Cafe, Coffee Shop, and Garden Centre are open. Our onsite outlets operate on a cashless basis.

An Award-Winning Visitor Attraction 

In 2025, Castle Howard was delighted to win the Accessible and Inclusive Tourism Award and Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Visit York Tourism Awards, Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Yorkshire Post Tourism Awards, a Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award, and we are an accredited VisitEngland Quality Assured Visitor Attraction. Castle Howard's 21st Century Renaissance restoration project also won five major national awards, including the Historic Houses Restoration Award and the Georgian Group’s Restoration of a Georgian Interior Award.

The House

Castle Howard has been home to the Howard family for more than 300 years. Explore iconic architecture and beautiful interiors when you visit the House, including the Great Hall which rises 70 feet into the air. A visit in 2025 promises a grand reveal of a once-in-a-generation project transforming the House interiors, including restoring the lost Tapestry Drawing Room. The House is open from Spring to October, and is dressed for Christmas from November to January.

The Gardens and Grounds at Castle Howard include lakes, follies, woodland, temples, and statues - all of which bring out the colour and drama of the four seasons. The Gardens are open daily (excluding the Walled Garden), and are dog-friendly.

Castle Howard’s 21st Century Renaissance

"There is nowhere on Earth like Castle Howard." - The Times

After stages of planning beginning in 2019, Castle Howard finally unveiled its once-in-a-generation transformation project in April 2025 - the 21st Century Renaissance, including the restoration of the breathtaking Tapestry Drawing Room, which had previously been destroyed in a fire in 1940.

The project included a complete rehang of Castle Howard's art collection, inspiring revamped areas including the Long Gallery and the Grand Staircase, and has been the result of the work of dozens of craftspeople.

The 21st Century Renaissance project has become a living example of commitment to restoration and conservation of this historic country home, and visitors are able to experience this incredible transformation.

Please note that the House is currently closed and will reopen 20th March.

Restoring nature on the Estate: The Bog Hall Habitat Bank

We are thrilled to announce a landmark nature restoration and rewilding project on our historic Estate – designed and delivered in collaboration with Environment Bank.

The Bog Hall Habitat Bank: transforming 440 acres

A 440-acre area of the Estate known as Bog Hall will go under a major project, to transform it from difficult to farm, low-yielding agricultural land into a thriving space for nature. The area, which is greater than the area inside the York City Walls, is a designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC), within the Howardian Hills National Landscape, and has been carefully selected for its immense potential to enhance biodiversity.

Working with Environment Bank ecologists, our goal is to almost triple the biodiversity over the next 30 years.

Starring Castle Howard

Castle Howard has been the filming location for many film and television productions since the 1960s, playing host to stars such as Sophia Loren, Stanley Kubrick and Laurence Olivier. Most famously, Castle Howard was the Marchmain's family home in the 1981 series Brideshead Revisited, reprising its role in 2008 when Miramax returned to shoot the feature film starting Ben Whishaw. Today, for many, the house remains synonymous with Evelyn Waugh's iconic novel.

Netflix and Shondaland’s acclaimed drama Bridgerton, broadcast in 2020, was also shot in the House and Gardens. Castle Howard doubled as Clyvedon Castle, the Duke of Hastings’ home that he shares with his new wife Daphne, played by Rege Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor. For a longer stay, book a luxurious Holiday Cottage, many of which are located in Coneysthorpe, which was the setting of Clyvedon Village in Bridgerton.
